In 1941, a Black college football coach in segregated Louisiana walked onto a dirt field.

He had no budget and no assistants. The state expected the program to quietly dissolve.

Instead, he stayed for 55 years.

The institution was called the Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute.

Today, it is known as Grambling State University.

The campus sat in Lincoln Parish, surrounded by pine trees and sharecropping farms.
