About the event
Reedy Chapel A.M.E. Church in Galveston, known as the "Mother Church of African Methodism in Texas,"
served as a central site for
the announcement of General Gordon Granger’s General Orders, No. 3 on June 19, 1865.
The emancipation notice was famously posted on its doors, marking the
birthplace of Juneteenth and the freedom of Texas slaves.
